Vegetarians in disguise!

Alice millipede 2

This handsome creature is Alice, our giant African millipede. Many people think that our millipedes are centipedes when they first meet them. It's an easy mistake to make, but centipedes have less legs and are active and aggressive carnivores, our millipedes are mostly vegetarian, scavenging on any plant detritus they find.

Millipedes are born with around six legs. As they grow they get bigger and longer, adding another segment and another 2 pairs of legs. We estimate that Alice has around 250 legs, but I've never sat and counted because I have a life. Millipedes have very poor eyesight so rely on their wiggly antenna on their head to smell and feel their way around the rain forests.
