half-pint harriot

This little girl is Harriet, our tiny Horsefield’s tortoise. She’s still in training, but she’s getting braver every day! Tortoises are mostly vegetarian and Harriet’s favourite food is dandelion. Many people think that tortoises evolved their shelled, rotund bodies for protection- but this is only partly true. Recent discoveries show that tortoise ribs fused together to provide anchor points for powerful muscles long before their protective shells appeared! That’s what makes our tiny tortoises so powerful when they dig through the earth. Tiny, but mighty.
