Gastro gastropods

Lion Learners African Land Snail

This is Shelly, one of our lovely Giant African land snails. Snails are classed as Gastropods, wich means stomoach foot, on acount of thier slimy belly acting as a 'foot' as they slither along. Snails have teeny tiny eyes on the end of their longest pair of tentacles. These eyes are nowhere near as well developed as our eyes, they scarcely tell the difference between light and shadow. Their bottom two tenticles are used to smell their way around. They are what help point snails in the direction of food. Our snails like their vegies, especially cucumber, but they often eat cuttlefish bones too. The calcium in these bones helps them grow a nice strong shell.
